“Around the wildfire: Algorithms, Humans, and Stories”

Since the dawn of civilization, humans have been telling stories. Etched in rocks in the deep darkness of caves depicted in vivid colours of the forests, written on yellowed parchments in hieroglyphics beyond the understanding of the modern netizens, or presented in audio-visual 30-seconder reels with moving images and background scores – stories remain. Cut to the 21st century and we see that human beings make stories with continually evolving formats, but have also come to a juncture where the format, the algorithm, has started to define the content of the story, giving birth to the discourse of who’s the narrator – homo sapiens or machina/algorismus.

Amidst the rampant use of algorithmization enabled by AI, the common theme of AI systems is the human factor. Humans play an essential role in designing, developing, and operationalizing AI systems. We have a remit to ensure those systems run transparently, perform equitably, value our privacy, and effectively fulfill human needs. And enable us to tell immersive stories.

The present ongoing development of human–AI interaction with a particular focus on the “human” dimension and provides insights to improve the design of AI that could be genuinely beneficial and effectively used in society.

The VIIth JLU International Festival of Media on 9th and 10th March 2024, centres around the overarching theme “Around the wildfire: Algorithms, Humans, and Stories”, and has been curated by the Faculty of Journalism and Creative Studies, Jagran Lakecity University. The year’s edition of the festival aims to broaden, advance conversations and facilitate scholarly and industry-relevant exchanges in the domains of journalism, media & communications, design & animation, and filmmaking & events by connecting practitioners and scholars belonging to diverse backgrounds and approaches under one umbrella, with a specific reference to how humans and algorithms interact and the resultant ecosystem that ensues.

With all the new technology, digital tools and connectivity, one of the most interesting fallouts has been the intensification of social connections… connecting the world as a single place, and creating a greater awareness of opinion, bias, and raw news. The intersection of globalization, communication, creativity and journalism defines an important and growing field of research, particularly concerning the public sphere and spaces for political discourse.

This festival will add to the growing insights into various perspectives about how AI has impacted people and society and how it will do so in the future, and understanding how we can collaborate, navigate and deploy algorithm systems that are beneficial, legitimate, usable by humans, and designed considering and respecting human values and tell better stories.

The festival aspires to trigger ideas through a combination of keynote addresses, fireside chats, workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions and exhibitions. The speakers are all high achievers and veterans in their respective spaces but at the same time they are connected with academia through the ever-evolving thread of information, behaviour change, influence and action, and through this festival they will address a wide range of topics within the thinking, research and practice of media, communication, journalism and culture.

In the Indian context, which is the world’s largest democracy, media and change are intertwined strongly thereby also posing challenges of truthful interpretation as well as inclusive opportunities for all. This two day confluence shall offer a deep dive into the current issues pertaining to journalism, industry trends, practices, challenges, and behaviors in relation to diverse media in phygital setup. The festival shall facilitate special addresses and interactions with leading experts in journalism, media and communication, films and design along with masterclasses and workshops over the course of two days often through storytelling.

“People, Communication and Trust: Decoding Media in the Phygital World”

Globalization and the emergence of digital technology have changed our society. It has become global and worldwide. The opening of borders and new technologies have given rise to an exponential growth in the movement of knowledge and people. People now have access to unlimited knowledge, by any channel and at any time. This hyper connected society that is free of intermediaries is becoming more demanding than ever, and its consumption habits are following suit. The roles in the power play have changed, and brands now have to be user-centric, which means that consumer expectations come first in marketing strategies. Phygital blurs the line between physical and digital media messages & channels to create a consistent overarching experience.

“Reimagining Media in a Hyperconnected World”

Be it a threat of an economic downturn, the need to figure out how to stand out with the growing noise around public issues and the ever-changing marketplace, the most pressing issue will vary depending on who you talk to. It’s a tumultuous time and one that isn’t easy for marketers, especially those looking for consistency. There’s a realization that having data on consumers and being able to target them with your brand message isn’t enough to win the day if a brand doesn’t have a message that resonates with consumers. Internet and social media, in particular, have changed advertising techniques forever making them more advanced and opening the way for new trends to appear in 2020.

In the media industry where digital transformation was already in motion, a multiplier effect has been triggered by the global pandemic. All this and more has brought the world face to face with an unprecedented opportunity to reimagine the future of media, across all types.

Journalism and trust, Misinformation, reliance on data, brand building , design thinking for impact and change, films and animation, experiential marketing, advertising and public relations and behaviour change are all been discussed and making an effort to stay relevant in an increasingly crowded and fragmented media marketplace. enter.

We can’t over emphasize the importance of trust with our communities, audiences and consumers. We see a fundamental shift in how journalism, experiential marketing, films & animation, advertising, PR leaders are trying to redefine what it means for their audiences and consumers.

What stays consistent is the need to understand people, consumers, behavior and insights.

With all the new technology, digital tools and connectivity, one of the most interesting fallouts has been the intensification of social connections… connecting the world as a single place, and creating a greater awareness of opinion, bias, and public stance. A well-aligned media in this hyper connected world ,and as many say, in these uncertain times goes a long way in establishing a deeper communication connects.

The bottom line is, the world is changing faster than ever. What are consistent are the story telling, media forms, platforms and human truth. The main purpose of V JLU International Festival of Media and Design, is to act as a platform for practitioners and researchers to share and discuss their experiences, trends, campaigns, ideas and perspectives.

Proposition for the Competition

Apurva Vij is an aspiring film writer and she loves to explore ideas that might appear strange, and in some cases even downright morbid. However, her flair for taking up uncomfortable topics has defined her course as a film writer. In order to bring out the minute details of a particular location and its surroundings, Apurva keeps visiting places to derive inspiration. Recently, she thought of writing a script for a Bollywood horror film and with an intention to bring the same to fruition, she travelled to the well-known haunted village of Kuldhara in Rajasthan. Basis her visit, she made various notes of the location and about the local folklores. But, instead of ordinarily writing a script regarding the village and the paranormal activities occurring therein, Apurva thought of writing on a more nuanced subject – the effect of Poltergeist ghosts on people. Simply put, Poltergeist ghosts are ones who commit mischief by making loud noises, causing the flickering of lights and the most important – making their presence felt.

During her journey of writing the script, Apurva beautifully intertwined the historical elements of the site in Kuldhara, its folklores and surroundings with her subject of Poltergeist ghosts. Her story regarding the Poltergeist ghostsis that Bapurao, the protagonist’s father dies and re-appears at night to be the usual abusive drunk man. He causes mischief, wreaks havoc and even pushes the other characters in the story towards suicide. The story focuses on the protagonist’s internal battle with himself to try and rid the people of his father’s ghost. After trying out various means to get rid of his father’s ghost, he concludes that the only way in which he will be able to control his father’s ghost is through dying himself. Pertinently, the last scene shows that the protagonist undertakes an elaborate trap mechanism by luring his father’s spirit over a boat and trapping it in a bottle being held by him. He steers the boat towards the sea and causes the explosive-laden boat to explode, mid-sea. This is where the film ends without any details on the fate of the protagonist or his father’s spirit. The message to be conveyed through the film focussed on the welfare-oriented attitude of the protagonist and his internal struggles of pitting himself up against his father.

After writing this script, Apurva got it registered with the Screenwriter’s Association in May 2021. She was very intrigued by the concept of her script and knew that it had the potential to make a big blockbuster film. In view thereof, she reached out to the legendary Bollywood producer Raman Sarkar. Raman is an old-school, know-it-all producer, who follows his own rules. Apurva was in contact with Raman’s secretary, Kashman Majahan and sent him the concept note of her film. Kashman and Apurva through conversations between them fixed a date for meeting between Raman and Apurva. While at the meeting, Apurva tendered her concept note once again and the script in an envelope to Raman, in the presence of Kashman. Ignoring both the note and the script, Raman asked Apurva to tell him the story in five minutes. Apurva narrated the story with vigorous gesticulation and explained her innovative end in detail. Just when Apurva was going to make a pitch for how the script would appeal to the younger audience, Raman characteristically rang his table bell and indicated that Apurva’s time was up.

Apurva was escorted outside by Kashman, who assured her that her story would be considered, and they would reach out to her in case of any further developments. With a puzzled perception of the events that had occurred, Apurva went back to her usual ways – a quest to write another uncomfortably engrossing tale. Few months later in December 2021, Apurva was scrolling through her Instagram when she came across a poster which caught her attention. To Apurva’s surprise, the poster pertained to a film ‘Baap is Back’, which had Raman’s name on it as the producer and mentioned TyoharMirtas as the script writer. Apurva got agitated looking at the poster since it portrayed the figure of a woman draped in white standing behind a man holding a beer bottle with a water body in the background. She instantly thought that the poster was a rip off of her story as the source of the poster was also Raman.

She approached Raman over call but could only get through to Kashman, who informed her that this is how the industry works. He informed her that only those stories which get the approval of Raman are greenlit for production and ‘Baap is Back’ was one of them. Further, Kashman did not reveal any other details of the script.

Apurva was of the opinion that she had been cheated and wrote a letter dated 24 December 2021 and issued it to Raman and Tyohar. In her letter, Apurva stated that the poster revealed that the theme of the film was similar to her script and that Raman had breached his obligation of confidentiality towards Apurva by sharing her script with Tyohar and picking up material therefrom.

Raman replied vide letter dated 5 January 2022 stating that her script was never opened and that Tyohar had registered his script with the Screenwriter’s Association back in July 2021. Further, Raman informed Apurva that there was absolutely no ground for her to conclude that her script had been copied in any manner whatsoever. Just because the poster contained certain visuals, Raman mentioned, that it could not lead to the conclusion that the film ‘Baap is Back’ is based on Apurva’s script because the film was to be viewed as a whole.

There was a breakage in communications at this point and Apurva did not know what to do. Her letter had certainly not been taken seriously and she did not have enough proof to institute any formal legal proceedings against Raman. While contemplating the future course of action, one morning Apurva found a CD slid under her door. Inquisitively and instantly, she played it on her laptop to realize that it was an uncut and in the production version of the film ‘Baap is Back’. The film, Apurva realized had various variations as compared to her script but had certain common underlying themes, such as the death of a family member, her coming back to life as a witch, the protagonist’s attempt to ward off the family member’s spirit, etc. However, the most striking similarity according to her was the last few shots where an almost identical scene was reproduced as found in Apurva’s script. However, this part was barely 15 minutes of the entire film of 1 hour 30 minutes.

It was based on this understanding that Apurva instituted a suit before the Bombay High Court against Raman and Tyohar on 24 January 2022 for copyright infringement and breach of confidentiality.

Issues:

 1. Whether the suit filed by Apurva against Raman and Tyohar is maintainable before the High Court of Bombay?
 2. Whether Apurva can institute a suit for breach of confidentiality against Raman?
 3. Whether Apurva can claim copyright infringement against Raman and Tyohar for the script of the movie?

Note: The participants may divide the sub-issues as they please, or add any suitable issue as deemed fit.

]]> Two Days International Conference on Impact of The Covid-19 Pandemic on Long-Term Societal Well-Being https://activitiesjlu.pristineideas.com/two-days-international-conference-on-impact-of-the-covid-19-pandemic-on-long-term-societal-well-being/ Thu, 17 Feb 2022 06:39:32 +0000 https://activities.jlu.edu.in/?p=5580

About the Conference

The world has been in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic for the past two years now, leading to the emergence of multifaceted crises worldwide. Various forums on national as well as international level have deliberated on the effects of the pandemic. However, a pandemic of such proportions would not entirely be limited to immediate, apparent consequences only. As the aftershocks of the pandemic are being documented and the world continues to make strides through coping with a worldwide health emergency, the conference aims at exploring the long-term upshot of the COVID-19 pandemic on societal well-being and invites scholars, practitioners, policy makers, professionals and members of the society at large to reflect on the pervasive consequences of the pandemic for the humanity.

About Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS)

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) is a political foundation. Established in 1955 as “Society for Christian-Democratic Civic Education”, the Foundation proudly took on the name of Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1964. With 16 regional offices in Germany and over 120 offices abroad, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation is committed to achieving and maintaining peace, freedom and justice through political education. We promote and preserve free democracy, social market economy, and the development and consolidation of the value consensus. We focus on consolidating democracy, the unification of Europe and the strengthening of transatlantic relations, as well as on development cooperation.

Sub-Themes of the Conference

Mental Health:

There exists a huge gap between the magnitude of the mental crisis and the resources that are available to deal with it. The round the clock work by all the mental health professionals around the world suddenly saw an upsurge with the pandemic even though it was considered to be primarily a medical crisis; its impact visibly massive as a psychological crisis also. The subtheme focuses on the impact of the medical crisis on the collective psyche of the population and invites papers which are relevant within this domain.

Social Structure and Social Change:

The pandemic enforced a jarring stop to the social interactions central to a human’s existence with physical distancing becoming a necessity. The inappropriately termed ‘social distancing’ led to actual social distancing within the society as people came to grips with loss of major proportions. The subtheme wishes to investigate the concerns that humanity faced with respect to the change in the societal systems and structure and how adaptation was achieved.

Education:

As the pandemic spread, the one industry to adapt seemingly very easily was the education industry. But as one online academic session changed into another, the concerns of the world regarding education during the pandemic grew immense. This shift did not only affect the classroom interaction between teacher and student but it also had an impact on the developmental aspects of students. The subtheme explores the benefits and pitfalls of the changing education world during the COVID-19 pandemic while reinventing the processes that are essential for ongoing, productive teaching-learning.
